Former Manchester United man Zlatan Ibrahimovic would have been relishing a trip to Liverpool, but he will miss Wednesday’s big match.

The Swedish international will miss AC Milan’s return to Champions League football because of an Achilles tendon injury which will keep him out of their trip to Liverpool, as confirmed by their boss Stefano Pioli.

AC Milan last appearance in Europe’s top club competition was in the 2014 edition’s last 16 and were hoping that veteran forward Ibrahimovic would make Wednesday’s clash at Anfield after scoring on his return from a four-month layoff against Lazio on Sunday, however injury has caused him a great deal.

According to Pioli, “He left the field with an inflammation of the tendon. We hoped he would be able to recover but it’s not the case.”

As it is now, coach Stefano Pioli will name Ante Rebic or former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud as his attacking spearhead when he selects his side to face Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

Ibrahimovic will turn 40 early next month, he scored seven minutes after coming off the bench at the San Siro, raising Pioli’s hopes that his talismanic attacker will feature in champions league but Achilles tendon injury has held him back.

Milan at the beginning of this season, seem very successful and ready to play as they headed to Anfield, with three wins from their opening three Serie A fixtures putting them level with Napoli and league leaders Roma.
