Lionel Messi is known for breaking and rewriting history in football, but his shocking individual breakage and form in 2012 was incredible to Media and fans.

Messi won more in other seasons. The 2011/12 season, for example, was one of the few in the 2010s that Barcelona didn’t win La Liga, while he won the Champions League in 2011 and 2015 but not 2012 – the Catalans were knocked out by an underdog Chelsea in the semi-finals.

In that year there was also a tournament with Argentina which he couldn’t win anything, Copa del Rey was his only trophy that year. But on an individual level, nobody has ever or will ever match what Messi did.

He managed to score an astonishing and outstanding 91 goals in a calendar year, scoring 73 for FC Barcelona and 12 for Argentina.

Most world class prolific strikers are hailed for scoring 40 goals, Messi raised the bar. His career alone has set new expectations across the board at the highest level.

Messi’s incredible and shocking form saw him netting 73 in the 2011/12 season and netting 60 in 2012/13. His final league tally in 2011/12 was 50 goals, a record in La Liga and a record as a winning mark in the European Golden Shoe stakes.

To show how astonishing that year was, even peak Christiano Ronaldo never matched it, even Messi himself couldn’t match it again, underlining how incredible it was.

For the Balon d’or that year, it was certain where it was heading to. It is also no surprise that Messi swept over 40% of the overall vote from an original shortlist of 23. Even though Ronaldo also had an outstanding year – the best of his career at that point – it wasn’t remotely close.

The Balon d’or that year was Messi’s fourth in his career. This win saw him surpass the previous three first set by Johan Cruyff in the 1970s and later matched by Michel Platini and Marco van Basten in the 1980s and 1990s respectively.

In just 24 years Messi equalled this feat, which theoretically, is the best years of his career still ahead of him. That was absolutely true because 2012 shattered everything.

A very memorable year capped his football career,as one of the legends of the game,a year that people never imagined to see, and will be anticipating to see of recent, one that plays football just like him.
