Liverpool who are not the only team losing their best players to AFCON, will be hopeful to have them back before top EPL encounter.
Both Sadio Mane of Senegal and Mohammed Salah of Egypt, will both participate in AFCON which is being staged at Cameroon, through January.
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that Liverpool will receive a boost in the New Year and have Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane available for their blockbuster clash with Chelsea who are also among the title contenders.
The Senegalese Mane will be in action first, when Senegal play Zimbabwe on January 10 with Egypt’s campaign starting against Nigeria 24 hours later.
The two wonderful players both have 28 premier league goals between, are set to miss the EPL games against Crystal Palace and Brentford.
They could potentially miss two FA Cup games and the Carabao Cup semi-final also – but Klopp is desperate for them to face Chelsea.
There are already discussions between Jurgen Klopp and the two nations, but nothing has been reached yet
“I am an optimistic person so I hope so, but it’s not written in stone, not completely in our hands.” Klopp said.
Meanwhile Klopp revealed that there’s not yet any positive update on Mohammed Salah’s contract situation.
There’s only one deal agreed this week, and that’s the one with goalkeeper John Achterberg extending his terms to 2024.
The Merseyside red Liverpool this week appointed Claudio Taffarrel, the Brazil World Cup winner, to their goalkeeping coach staff.
Klopp also revealed that it was no reflection on Achterberg’s work or suggested he was being in some way phased out.
The coach dropped a statement saying: “It’s really good and exciting. He is a brilliant guy and he’s older than me, which is important because I was the oldest in the coaching staff!
“John Achterberg renewed his contract, by the way, until 2024. Because people very often make the wrong conclusions because of some things.
“John is the head of the goalie department and Taffa is a wonderful add on to that,” Klopp emphasised.
Meanwhile, Liverpool who thrashed Everton 1:4 away from home in a Merseyside derby, will love to keep their pursuit for the top spot of the league when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend.
